Horrible tech support!!Beware!! May 5, 2010 Pamela Gross (Chicago IL) We're having trouble getting the El Gato to work. After a month they REFUSE to give phone support.
VERY UNHELPFUL TECH SUPPORT! BEWARE! If you have a problem, you're out of luck.
Poor hardware. Great software. April 25, 2010 Clark (TX USA) Simply put, the tuner stick has poor reception. I should have done my research better. Others have found as well that this tuner stick just can't pull in channels as well as tuner units that have their own power supply (such as HD Homerun). After trying to add amplifiers to my antenna and moving my antenna to an outside location, the real solution was to replace the tuner stick with a tuner unit that sits on my network and has its own power supply. Everything else remaining the same, I can now pull in all of those stations that faded out during the evening. Yay, Craig Ferguson again! And a network-based tuner unit can be used by your other networked computers.
On the other hand, for the Mac, I'm really pleased with the EyeTV DVR software. "Season passes," auto playlist creation, pre- and post-buffer time added to the recording time. The only major fault I have is it doesn't easily save recordings in a form that my PCs can see over the network. You can write/acquire scripts that will export your recording automatically, but that's an unfortunate burden. You can buy additional copies of the software for your other macs and then easily share the recorded libraries, but they don't make versions for the PC.
Summary, buy their software separately. Pass on this tuner stick (and maybe all other usb-based tuners).
Froglegs April 24, 2010 David W. Wood (Little Rock) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Overall a good product. Easy to use. Set up easy. I use it daily. The picture is strong and without flicker. I do think that in the full screen mode that the picture quality is a little blurred. It is not quite as good visually as watching TV but well worth the cost and better than another product I tried that had an internal TV tuner.
EyeTV is the EASIEST way to get TV on the Mac! April 16, 2010 Patrick Bianchi (Howell, NJ) 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
I purchased the EyeTV solely for the purpose of recording my primetime shows and converting them to a portable format to watch at work. For this, the EyeTV is flawless! Everything is easily automated and with the help of Automator, I could set it up to require no interaction from me at all. The video quality is top notch and works great on my 2.0GHz Mac Mini, which I have connected to a home theater receiver to get Dolby Digital 5.1 from the recorded shows. I've only tested this with a cable signal, so I can't comment on the EyeTV's ability to pick up OTA signals, although I'm sure it's fine based on other reviews. Overall, you can't go wrong with this for basic TV viewing and recording.
The only complaint I have is the lack of third-party software support. It's not really anything against the product, but it would be nice to see EyeTV or someone else create a total Windows Media Center like experience for the Mac platform, and then my life would be complete. ;-)
Again, I highly recommend this product for ANY Mac user that wants to bring TV to the best OS there is. It's well worth the price.
Save your money... April 13, 2010 Lucky Mommy, California 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
My husband ordered this for me as a gift. The first one arrived and worked for about five minutes before it died. We spend two day trying to figure out what the problem was and reconviguring all of our connections - including buying new cables! Even downloaded and printed the on-line manual but it was no help.
Amazon was quick to refund and we ordered another one to replace it. Second one never worked at all - it arrived DOA. Amazon was quick to refund on the second one as well.
One thing you should be aware of, this will NOT record from your TV if you have Dish or DirectTV. It may from a local cable company (?) and it supposedly records from a satellite dish (as long as it's not Dish or Direct TV because they scramble signals to keep you from recording directly to DVD or from your DVR). We were not aware of that until we found the tiny tiny print on the internet site researching why thing thing wasn't working (both times).
However, I had planned on transferring old family VHS tapes to my computer then make copies for family - so I was fine with not being able to record from the TV. After the second arrived DOA - I just gave up on transferring videos this way.
Not going for the third strike on this one.
