An HDTV Glossary for the Layperson

If you are new to the world of high-definition televisions, you need to know different terms and bits of information in order to locate and purchase the best television possible. With so many specifications on hand, this is essential, otherwise you are going to end up with a lackluster HDTV.

To start, the top resolution of an HDTV is 1080 (horizontal lines). There are other HDTVs with a 720 resolution, although this does not provide the full picture quality.

The next aspect to look for is the refresh rate. This is the number of times the image flashes on the screen. The higher the refresh rate (measured in hertz), the smoother the image. A refresh rate of 240 is desired, although 120 is adequate. A refresh rate of 60 is standard on lower end televisions.

The color contrast level is also important. This is the number of colors the television is able to reproduce. The more colors the TV is able to create the better. The reading is displayed as 10,000:1, meaning the single television is able to produce up to 10,000 different colors.

There are other minor features to look for on a television, including the ability to connect to the Internet.
